Dacia Maraini

Dacia Maraini (born 1936 in Fiesole) is an Italian writer. She spent her childhood in Japan and her youth in Sicily. As a child, she was interned in a Japanese camp because of her family’s antifascist stance. Maraini became an important voice in Italian literature and a leading figure in the women’s movement. Her work includes novels, short stories, poetry, essays, plays and screenplays. She was among the early writers to address violence against women and collaborated with Pier Paolo Pasolini on film projects in Africa. She has received numerous literary awards. Her notable works include The Silent Duchess, Bagheria, Three Women and Trio.
