Conrad Ferdinand Meyer (1825–1898) was a Swiss poet and writer of the Realist period, and is regarded as one of the major Swiss lyric poets and narrators of the 19th century writing in German. He produced poetry, historical novellas, and novels. His best-known works include the verse epic “Huttens letzte Tage” (1871), the novella “Das Amulett” (1873), the novel “Jürg Jenatsch” (1876), and the poem “Der römische Brunnen.” Travels in Italy influenced his work. Meyer suffered recurrent depression and was treated in psychiatric institutions. In 1880, he received an honorary doctorate from the University of Zurich.
