Clemens J. Setz was born in Graz in 1982 and studied mathematics and German at the University of Graz. As an author and translator, he published novels, short stories, poetry, plays, screenplays and essays. His notable works include the novels Söhne und Planeten, Die Frequenzen, Indigo and Die Stunde zwischen Frau und Gitarre, as well as the short-story collection Die Liebe zur Zeit des Mahlstädter Kindes. He received the Leipzig Book Fair Prize in 2011 for that collection and the Wilhelm Raabe Literature Prize in 2015. In 2021, Setz was awarded the Georg Büchner Prize.
