Claus Philipp was born in Wels in 1966. He worked as head of the culture section and as a film and literary critic for the daily newspaper Der Standard, and served as managing director of the Viennese Stadtkinos and its associated film distributor until 2017. He has also published books on figures including Christoph Schlingensief, Alexander Kluge, and Ulrich Seidl.
