Christy Brown (1932–1981) was an Irish writer and artist. He was born in Dublin and died in Parbrook, Somerset. He had cerebral palsy and could deliberately move only his left foot. At the age of five, he began using it to draw and write; he did not learn to speak until he was 18. His humorous autobiography, *My Left Foot*, published when he was 21, became known internationally. In 1972, he married the nurse Mary Carr.
