Charles Le Gai Eaton was an English writer, intellectual and diplomat. After studying history at Cambridge and receiving military training at the Royal Military College, he initially served in the British Army. He later worked as an assistant lecturer in English literature at Cairo University, as the editor of a weekly newspaper in Jamaica, and as a press officer for the British government. In 1962 he joined the British diplomatic service. While in Cairo, he met Martin Lings, who became a lifelong friend. Eaton became a Muslim and published works on Islam, religion and culture.
