Carlo Rovelli, born in Verona in 1956, is an Italian-American physicist. He has conducted research and taught at institutions including Imperial College London, the University of Rome, Yale University, the University of L’Aquila, and the University of Pittsburgh. In 1998–99, he was research director at the Centre de Physique Théorique in Luminy; since 2000, he has been a professor of physics at the University of Marseille. Together with Lee Smolin, he developed loop quantum gravity, an approach seeking to connect Einstein’s theory of gravity with quantum theory.
