Brigitte Kronauer (1940–2019) was born in Essen, Germany. She studied German and education and worked as a teacher until 1971 before pursuing a career as a writer. Her first novel, “Frau Mühlenbeck im Gehäus” (1980), attracted considerable attention. She published novels, short stories and essays. Her work received numerous awards, including the Fontane Prize, the Hubert Fichte Prize, the Joseph Breitbach Prize, the Georg Büchner Prize (2005) and the Jean Paul Prize (2011).
