Brian W. Aldiss

Brian W. Aldiss (1925–2017) was an English writer and one of the leading authors of science fiction. After serving in India and Burma, he remained in Sumatra until 1947 and then worked as a bookseller in England. He began writing short stories during this period, initially using pseudonyms. He achieved recognition with the novel *Non-Stop*, about a generation starship. His notable works also include *The Long Afternoon of Earth* and the *Helliconia* saga. Aldiss received, among other honors, the Hugo Award, the BSFA Award, the John W. Campbell Memorial Award, and the Kurd Laßwitz Prize. He was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE).
