Brassaï, born Gyula Halász, was born in 1899 in Brassó, then part of Austria-Hungary. After studying in Budapest and Berlin, he moved to Paris and initially worked as a journalist. His friend André Kertész introduced him to photography, which he began using to illustrate his articles. Brassaï became internationally known through his 1932 photobook “Paris by Night.” In addition to photography, he worked as a writer, draughtsman, and sculptor. He died in Nice in 1984.
