Bettine von Arnim (1785–1859), née von Brentano, was a German writer and a prominent figure of Romanticism. She became best known for “Goethe’s Correspondence with a Child,” a literary rendering of her correspondence with Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. She also wrote other epistolary works and political texts. She had seven children with the writer Achim von Arnim and edited several of his works after his death. In her political activities, she advocated, among other causes, the intellectual and political emancipation of women and Jews.
