Bernhard Oberdieck was born on February 24, 1949, in Oerlinghausen, Westphalia. After training as a lithographer, he studied free graphics at the Bielefeld School of Applied Arts, later known as the Bielefeld University of Applied Sciences. Following brief periods as an art teacher and advertising artist, he began working as a freelance illustrator in 1978. He illustrated more than 300 books for German and international publishers, particularly children’s books. He became known in part for a detailed technique using colored pencils and pastel chalk, and later also worked with acrylics and watercolors. His work was exhibited in several countries, including Germany, France, Japan, Taiwan, Spain, the United States, and Finland.
