Barbara Auer (born 1959 in Konstanz) studied acting at the Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst in Hamburg. After making her stage debut at the Staatstheater Mainz, she worked at several theatres, including Schauspielhaus Wuppertal, Vienna’s Burgtheater and Hamburg’s St. Pauli-Theater. In 1982, Alexander Kluge discovered her for film. She subsequently appeared in numerous cinema and television productions, including “Yella,” “The Book Thief” and adaptations of Donna Leon’s crime novels, in which she played Signora Brunetti. From the mid-2000s, she also worked as an audiobook narrator. Her awards include the Goldene Kamera, the Grimme Award and the German Television Award, which she won for a second time in 2020 as Best Actress for “Preis der Freiheit.”
