Auguste Rodin (1840–1917) was a sculptor. He was born in Paris and died in Meudon. Before establishing himself as an artist, he worked as a decorator, caster and chaser in construction and at the Sèvres porcelain manufactory. His sculptures introduced new forms of expression, with their animated surfaces approaching Impressionism and their subject matter influenced by Symbolism. His best-known works include The Thinker, The Kiss and The Burghers of Calais.
