August Wilhelm Schlegel (1767–1845) was a German literary historian and critic, translator, classical philologist, and Indologist. He taught as an associate professor at the University of Jena. Together with his brother Friedrich Schlegel and other writers, he helped shape German Romanticism. He is particularly known for his close translations of 17 plays by William Shakespeare.
