Arthur C. Clarke (1917–2008) was a British science-fiction author. After serving as a technical officer in the Royal Air Force during the Second World War, he studied physics and mathematics at King’s College London. His interest in science fiction was sparked by the works of H. G. Wells and Olaf Stapledon. His first story appeared in the magazine Astounding in 1946, followed by his first novel in 1948. Over the following decades, Clarke published award-winning novels and stories as well as popular-science books and articles that anticipated technological developments. He died in Sri Lanka in 2008.
