Aphra Behn (1640–1689) was an English writer, playwright, and translator. She is regarded as one of the first women to earn a living by writing. In her youth, she spent several years in Surinam and later worked as an agent for King Charles II. She wrote numerous plays as well as the novel “Oroonoko,” set in Surinam and regarded as one of her best-known works.
