Anita Brookner

Anita Brookner (1928–2016) was born in London and studied art history at King’s College, followed by postgraduate study at the University of Paris. She became an expert on eighteenth- and nineteenth-century French art and, in 1967, was the first woman to hold the Slade Professorship of Fine Arts at the University of Cambridge. Her literary debut, the novel »A Start in Life«, was published in 1981. She received the Booker Prize in 1984 for »Hotel du Lac«. Brookner published a total of 24 novels before her death.
