Alfred Lansing (d. 1975) first served in the U.S. Navy before leaving the service in the late 1950s to pursue a career as a journalist. He became known for his account of Shackleton’s 1914–1916 expedition. In preparing the work, he drew on diaries, letters, newspaper reports, and interviews with survivors of the Endurance crew.
