Alexander Kratochvil

Alexander Kratochvil (born 1965 in Munich) is a Slavist and literary translator from Ukrainian and Czech. He studied Slavic studies, East European history and German studies, and worked at Slavic studies institutes in Greifswald, Munich, St. Gallen and Prague. Among the authors he has translated are Oksana Zabuzhko, Yurii Vynnychuk, Oleksandr Irvanets, Sofia Andrukhovych and Pavel Šrut. He has also published books on Ukrainian and Czech literature, including “Trauma-Literatur-Gedächtnis” (2019), and translated the “Amadoka” trilogy. In 2024, he received the International Hermann Hesse Prize jointly with Maria Weissenböck and Sofia Andrukhovych.
