Alexander Gerst, born in 1976 in Künzelsau, is a German geophysicist and astronaut. Before joining the European Space Agency’s astronaut corps in 2009, he studied active volcanoes. In 2014, he took part in the ISS mission “Blue Dot.” In 2018, he completed his second mission there, “Horizons,” and became the first German to command the space station, serving in that role for three months. Gerst has received numerous awards for his scientific work and commitment.
