Aleksandar Tišma (1924–2003) was born in the former Yugoslavia and grew up multilingual in Novi Sad. After the Second World War, he worked as a journalist, publishing editor and translator before devoting himself to writing. His literary work was translated into numerous languages and received several awards, including the Leipzig Book Prize for European Understanding and the Austrian State Prize for European Literature. Tišma died in Novi Sad in 2003.
