Alan Garner was born in 1934 in Congleton, Cheshire, and grew up in Alderley Edge. He attended Magdalen College, Oxford, and began writing his first novel, The Weirdstone of Brisingamen, at the age of 22. Together with its sequel, The Moon of Gomrath, the book is regarded as a classic of fantasy literature for young readers. In 2001, Garner was appointed to the Order of the British Empire (OBE) for his services to literature. His novel Treacle Walker was shortlisted for the 2022 Booker Prize.
