A. J. Cronin (Archibald Joseph Cronin) was born in Scotland in 1896. After the First World War, he completed his medical studies with distinction and worked in a psychiatric hospital, as a ship’s doctor, and as a physician serving an impoverished mining community in Wales. He later practised medicine in London. Cronin began writing in 1930 and became known as a novelist. His medical background also informed his novel about the doctor Manson. Cronin died in Montreux, Switzerland, in 1981.
