Ai Qing

Ai Qing (1910–1996) was a Chinese poet and artist. He began studying art in Hangzhou in 1928 and lived in Paris from 1929 to 1932, where he engaged with modern European poetry, philosophy, and painting and wrote his first poems. After returning to China, he was sentenced to six years in prison for subversion as a member of the League of Left-Wing Artists. He later lived in the “Liberated Areas,” was sent with his family into exile in northeastern China, and was rehabilitated in the late 1970s. His poetry reflects the political and social upheavals of twentieth-century China.
