How to Kill Your Family
von Bella Mackie
I have killed several people (some brutally, others calmly) and yet I currently languish in jail for a murder I did not commit. When I think about what I actually did, I feel somewhat sad that nobody will ever know about the complex operation that I undertook. Getting away with it is highly preferable, of course, but perhaps when I’m long gone, someone will open an old safe and find this confession. The public would reel. After all, almost nobody else in the world can possibly understand how someone, by the tender age of 28, can have calmly killed six members of her family. And then happily got on with the rest of her life, never to regret a thing. When Grace Bernard discovers her absentee millionaire father has rejected her dying mother’s pleas for help, she vows revenge, and sets about to kill every member of his family. Readers have a front row seat as Grace picks off the family one by one – and the result is as and gruesome as it is entertaining in this wickedly dark romp about class, family, love… and murder. But then Grace is imprisoned for a murder she didn’t commit.Outrageously funny, compulsive and subversive, perfect for fans of Killing Eve and My Sister, the Serial Killer.

This book is trying very hard to be edgy. It wants to be Killing Eve meets Fleabag but instead feels like a smug tweet that somehow became 300 pages. Yes, it's called How to Kill Your Family. No, it's not half as interesting as that title. The premise could've been brilliant: a woman weaponizing her class rage and committing violence as a form of structural critique. But instead, we get Grace: a character who sounds like she read The Communist Manifesto once and then returned to her expensive wine. The "anti-capitalist" voice here is pure aesthetic and has the depth of a tote bag that says "Eat the Rich" but costs 85€. Also let's not ignore the context. Bella Mackie is the daughter of a newspaper editor, married to a BBC personality, and quite literally the kind of person her protagonist pretends to hate. So when she's writing about takedowns of the upper class, it feels less like satire and more like elite cosplay. Grace doesn't want to dismantle systems she wants better taste in relatives. The writing itself is exhausting, all quippy monologue, no emotional depth. It's the literary equivalent of "I'm not like other girls" but if those other girls had actual character arcs. By the time she kills yet another barely developed family member, you're not horrified, you're just bored. This isn't social commentary. It's self indulgence in a black turtleneck. The perfect book for readers who mistake being insufferable for being interesting.
The Story itself was pretty interesting and I was invested. Sometimes it did drag on a bit but overall a good read. The only thing that bugged me was the ending of the book. It was definitely a plot twist but I didn’t like how suddenly a completely new character appeared and in a way took everything that she worked for.
Very funny, captivating and surprising to read. I really enjoyed it!
Bella Mackies “How to kill your family” is an insanely dark but also very humorous novel. The ways in which the main character kills her family are incredibly creative and partly disgusting. Midway through, the read feels a little dull, since you think she will simply kill off everybody one after another and that’s that but there’s a plot twist around the corner you simply don’t see coming.
