Under Locke
von Mariana Zapata
He was my boss, my brother’s friend, a Widow, an ex-felon, and a man I’d seen casually with a handful of women. But he was everything that gripped me, both the good and the bad. Worst case scenario if things turned awkward between us, I could go somewhere else. I’d gotten over epic heartbreak before, one more wouldn’t kill me. -- After moving to Austin following six months of unemployment back home, Iris Taylor knows she should be glad to have landed a job so quickly... even if the business is owned by a member of the same motorcycle club her estranged father used to belong to. Except Dex Locke might just be the biggest jerk she’s ever met. He’s rude, impatient and doesn’t know how to tell time. And the last thing they ever expected was each other. But it was either the strip club or the tattoo shop. … she should have chosen the strip club. -- “Babe, I’ve handpicked everythin’ and everyone in here. I know what I want and I get what I want,” he breathed. “And I keep what’s mine.”

And the award for cringiest first sex in a book goes to…
———second read (2024)——— actually really enjoyed it this time, more than the last time reading it! It’s not perfect, and not her best, but I love it anyway! 4.25
Dex is kind of a douche? I know Zapata likes weird nicknames.. But the fact that Dex called her "Babe" when they didn't even know each other was douchbag 101. And I dislike that Iris actually liked it. The feminist in me cringed every time because it wasn't an endearment. I found it (and honey, sweetheart, baby..) kind of degrading. The story wasn't bad and I liked the writing and that it wasn't as slowburn-ist as Zapatas storys usually are. But I feel like - her characters are always the same? I've read all her books (except Wait for it) and she writes the same characters over and over. Simply switching out the setting, the back stories however are often similar. Shitty or no parents at all, loners, "string independent woman doing stupid things in the name of their independence"... If you've read one of hers you've read them all. There are no real surprises. Don't get me wrong - I love some of her books. But I am annoyed by them at the same time.
