Reviewed by Raymond"There There" is a novel about identity, family, displacement, trauma, and what it means to be Native in modern America. I really enjoyed the way Tommy Orange brings together the stories of multiple characters, each dealing with their own complicated relationships with family, culture, and identity. At first, the different perspectives can feel disconnected, but as the novel progresses, the connections between them become increasingly clear. Orange's writing has something poetic about it. He doesn't romanticize his characters or their experiences, and there are no easy answers. Instead, the novel explores how history and generational trauma continue to affect people's lives while also showing the importance of community and connection. The multiple perspectives and shifting narrative can take some time to get used to, but I think this makes the story more powerful. Each character adds another piece to the larger picture, building toward a devastating and unforgettable conclusion. This is a difficult book at times, but an important one. The characters and their stories stayed with me after I finished reading.
Reviewed by EniI could have read this in a day easy. However I am glad I didn't and got to savor it over two weeks. Easily the best book I have read this year. I loved the writing, the shift in narration styles, the intervoweness. It has been some time since I got to live inside a book like I did with "There there". The characters, the setting, everything feels close, feels there. A must read.
