Die Idee ist richtig gut und ich liebe Geschichten, die an Bord eines Schiffes spielen - am besten inklusive LoveStory, weil es gibt kein Ausweichen auf einem Schiff. Gehofft hatte ich auf Vibes wie bei "Daughter of the pirate King", in der Hinsicht wurde ich jedoch enttäuscht. Die Protagonisten bleiben eher flach und haben sehr vorhersehbare klischeehafte Charaktereigenschaften, die wenig Tiefe zulassen. Der Prinz ist eingebildet, nimmt vieles selbstverständlich und entwickelt sich dann doch in eine entgegengesetzte Richtung - shocker. Normalerweise habe ich wirklich nicht viel gegen klischeehafte Darstellung, denn es ist doch immer etwas an einem Klischee dran, aber hier wurde es auch etwas plump umgesetzt. Der weibliche Gegenpart ist schon etwas mehrschichtiger. Sie ist mutig und braucht wirklich keinerlei männliche Unterstützung - sie muss eher ab und an den Prinzling retten. Das brachte etwas Erfrischendes in die Geschichte. Es gibt jedoch noch einen dritten Charakter, den "scholar" - also einen Gelehrten. Dieser wird aber absolut nur Gelehrter interpretiert und hat keinen anderen Zweck als ab und an Wissen abzugeben und den Hauptcharakteren auf der Quest damit zu helfen. Er wirkt ein bisschen wie der "Tipps" Button in einem Spiel, wenn man nicht weiter kommt. Das fand ich schade, da man ihm bestimmt mehr Persönlichkeit hätte geben können. Die Geschichte ist eher komplex dargestellt mit vielen Charakteren, die man dank verschiedener POVs jedoch gut greifen und einordnen kann. Obwohl das anfangs dafür sorgt, dass sich das Buch etwas zieht. Die "Bösen" sind in diesen POVs sehr einseitig dargestellt, doch eine Person überrascht gerade gegen Ende, was mich sehr gefreut hat. Das Worldbuilding hat mir auch gut gefallen und man bekommt schnell einen Überblick über die Welt und den Glauben, der in der Geschichte eine immense Rolle spielen wird. Die Quest scheint zunächst sehr einseitig, wird jedoch durch mehrere Twists unvorhersehbar und obwohl man doch weiß, worauf es am Ende wohl hinauslaufen wird, konnte ich nie erahnen, was gerade um die nächste Ecke auf mich warten wird. Dennoch blieb leider eine Sogwirkung bei mir aus, was aber auch daran liegen kann, dass mich die LoveStory nicht 100% abholen konnte. Sie bleibt eher oberflächlich und ich konnte die Gefühle nur teilweise nachvollziehen. Der erste allein geschriebene Fantasy Roman der Autorin ist noch etwas ausbaufähig, hat aber einen soliden Grundstein für weitere Bände gelegt.
Eine tolles Konzept und eine super Geschichte. Das Ende war wahnsinnig spannend. Nur die vielen povs haben mich etwas aus dem Konzept gebracht daran musste ich mich gewöhnen. Was aber nicht lang gedauert hat da die Charaktere sehr unterschiedlich zu lesen waren.
