Heartless

By Marissa Meyer

Format:Hardcover

From Marissa Meyer, the story of Wonderland's most notorious villain Long before she was the terror of Wonderland--the infamous Queen of Hearts--she was just a girl who wanted to fall in love. Catherine may be one of the most desired girls in Wonderland, and a favorite of the unmarried King of Hearts, but her interests lie elsewhere. A talented baker, all she wants is to open a shop with her best friend. But according to her mother, such a goal is unthinkable for the young woman who could be the next queen. Then Cath meets Jest, the handsome and mysterious court joker. For the first time, she feels the pull of true attraction. At the risk of offending the king and infuriating her parents, she and Jest enter into an intense, secret courtship. Cath is determined to define her own destiny and fall in love on her terms. But in a land thriving with magic, madness, and monsters, fate has other plans. In her first stand-alone teen novel, the New York Times-bestselling author of the Lunar Chronicles dazzles us with a prequel to Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. Meyer has woven all the elements of darkness and light, fate and free will, and love and hatred into an unforgettable story of the evolution of the Red Queen from a young girl who dreamed of true love and freedom to a madwoman best remembered for the phrase 'Off with his head.' This was an elite read, a treasure for every person who is fond of Alice in Wonderland thus should read it, it is heartbreaking and made me cry a whole lot especially from chapter 47 till the end, absolutely recommend!

The book definitely wasn’t bad. I actually thought the world-building was incredibly detailed, and it was so easy to picture everything in my head: the balls, the hat shop, the Pinkertons’ mansion. It really captured that classic Alice in Wonderland atmosphere. It felt like a more mature version while still keeping that whimsical, fairytale-like charm, which I really enjoyed. The story was very slow-paced, although you could feel the chemistry between the Fool and Cath right from the beginning. The overall plot was good, but it was also fairly predictable. That being said, I did enjoy the book overall. My biggest issue was the pacing. There were a lot of side scenes that didn’t really contribute much to the main story and often felt like they were just there to fill pages. At times, it became so slow and dragged out that I actually put the book down for a few months because I had absolutely no motivation to keep reading. Now that I’ve finally finished it, I’d say it’s a solid book. I liked it, but it wasn’t nearly as amazing as I expected it to be.
