Sometimes you have to look for criticism of colonisation in old works. A very good book about the oppression of Native Americans. The problem of the extermination of the indigenous population by cowboys in California and Texas was very important theme for a civilised author (Karl May) in the 19th century. That is why there are two positive main characters in his novel: the teacher Karl and the young Apache chief Winnetou. In this story, the narrator is a young European who is intelligent, handsome, strong, noble and merciful, as prescribed by his Christian religion. He emerges victorious from the most improbable traps, turns everyone to the good and even outshines the noble Indian Winnetou. A fine opener to the adventure series. 4/5 ⭐️
