Reviewed by Rieke S.Das Buch ist ein solider Take von Gesellschaftskritik, die in den dauerhaften Drogenrausch von den beiden Protagonisten verpackt ist. Zwischen den ganzen moralisch verwerflichen und unvorhersehbaren Tätigkeiten des unter starkem Drogeneinfluss stehenden Duos, beschreibt Hunter S. Thompson wie der American Dream zum Scheitern verurteilt sei und kritisiert nebenbei die Nixon Administration. Dabei dient der konsequente und ständige Drogenkonsum größtenteils zur Flucht aus der Realität, die davon geplagt ist, dass eine gesamte Generation an dem Versuch gescheitert ist Amerika zu etwas Besserem zu wandeln, was im Buch geschickt dargestellt wird.
