Reviewed by AvaswordspaceWell this was probably one of the best first lines I ever read in my entire life, followed by possibly one of the best first pages. This experience is best described with a quote from Django Unchained: „Gentlemen, you had my curiosity, now you have my attention.“ Also the rest of the book was quite enjoyable. I thought the characters and the world building were very well done, an interesting take on a magical school, that would rather kill that teach you, while still being safer than the outside. Additionally, the main character, El (Galadriel), not only made my Lord of the Rings fangirl heart happy, but she’s also the personification of THE maleficer of the century, but she doesn’t want to give in to her dark side. She’s a rather sarcastic and pragmatic person, who doesn’t like people and also doesn’t really get along very well with the other kids and now we follow her on a journey through the school year, facing various obstacles and actually making friends and allies along the way. The writing was good, maybe a little stretchy at times and I have the feeling that El’s and Orion’s powers could become a little too overpowered in the long run. Since together and at full capacity they could literally be invincible. That’s not really something I like in books, but let’s see what Part 2 will bring up. Nevertheless, this was a very enjoyable read.
