Recently escaped from the hell of Corregidor, The Last Lieutenant, Navy Lieutenant Commander Todd Ingram has been promised six months of relaxing duty in San Francisco. But in mid-1942, the U.S. is taking a terrible beating in a series of epic navel battles off Guadalcanal. Thus, Lieutenant Ingram is called back to the foray to stand against the Japanese Navy at the Battle of Cape Esperance and the Battle of the Santa Cruz Islands. Not only has he put his life on the line for his country, but for his girlfriend, First Lieutenant Helen Durand, as well. Trapped behind enemy lines on Mindanao, Helen's rescue is further hampered by the intensive espionage activities of 1942.
