WINTER'S ORBIT is a lot of things, but I don't know if it's what a lot of people say it is. Anyone who is in fandom and has twitter or tumblr probably knew of that person who said writing fanfiction was a waste of time because it teaches you the wrong things about writing. I'm not going to say why that person is wrong all over again because it's been done, but in the context of WINTER'S ORBIT, a story that is in fact not a fanfic, it's not fair to call it as such. There was a lot of context-building, the romance was not the A plot, and just because the body warmth trope was used doesn't automatically make it a fanfic. Of course I'm not saying that fanfic is lesser and WINTER'S ORBIT is of a higher value because it's been traditionally published, but I think the nuance in WINTER'S ORBIT is lost if compared to fanfic. (Don't get me started on the marketing of this book because it was... annoying.) I guess what I'm trying to say is that fanfic is one thing and originally published works are another. And people read both for completely different reasons. So sorry that this was less a review of the actual text and more of a means to an end to talk about something adjacent to the novel. Oh well.
