Rezension von JuliaViele Bücher locken Leser*innen mit dem Versprechen einer hoffnungsvollen Geschichte und halten es dann nicht, sondern breiten das Elend der Hauptfiguren aus - The Sentence beginnt düster und wird immer heller, je mehr sich die Protagonistin Tookie ihrer Gemeinschaft und ihren Gefühlen öffnet desto wärmer scheint dieser Roman. Strukturell spannend erzählt sich die Handlung durch verschiedene Abschnitte aus Tookies Leben und lotet sie und die anderen Figuren aus. Berichtet Alltägliches, ohne zu langweilen, ohne ins Banale abzudriften. Jeder Moment meißelt die Hauptfigur aus den Erzählsträngen heraus. Ein sehr besonderes Buch voller Hoffnungen, das das Jahr 2020 als Zeitgeschichte manifestiert, indem es die politischen Ereignisse mit den persönlichen Krisen fein abmischt.
