Ich kann gar nicht fassen, wie sehr mich dieses Buch mitgerissen hat. Habe es ursprünglich überhaupt erst auf meinem Radar gehabt, weil es fälschlicherweise als Romantasy kategorisiert wurde – was es nicht ist. Diese dunkle Fantasy enthält keine Romance. Normalerweise hätte ich gesagt, das ist für mich schon der erste Grund, das Buch nicht zu lesen oder ein Indiz dafür, es nicht mögen zu können. Aber wow. Ich bin richtig sprachlos darüber, wie gut ich dieses Buch fand. Ja, es ist brutal, ja, es ist grausam und man braucht auf jeden Fall das richtige Mindset, wenn man es liest. Aber bis zum Ende, wusste ich nicht, was geschehen würde, oder was ich überhaupt wollte, was geschieht. Wie die Protagonistin war ich so hin und hergerissen und fand, dass das Buch am Ende seinen perfekten Abschluss gefunden hat. Besser hätte ich mir ein Ende dieser Geschichte nicht vorstellen können. Die Autorin hat hier eine außergewöhnliche Welt geschaffen, ein spannendes und einzigartiges Magiesystem und wahnsinnig facettenreiche Figuren.

I picked up this book on a whim - it looked pretty and was available as a special edition for a reasonable price.... I did not expect to devour this book in a single day! It's well written, poetic and yet so easy to follow. Beautifully tragic in the best way possible.

This was quiet an emotional read and better than I expected but I had my problems with it. First, the fantasy aspect often disturbed the flow and emotional impact of the plot. When I started to feel inside an intense and serious scene, the description of whimsically looking animals (with flowers and leaves as fur) and floating blades really crushed my immersion. While the themes and setting felt very mature to me, the fantasy elements felt rather childish. Towards the end of the book fmc suddenly can see ghosts bc it easily gives her information she needs and moved the plot forward... So in my opinion, fantasy wasn't very necessary but sometimes an easy and quick way to get characters more powerful. (And maybe to sell the book not only in historical fiction but also in fantasy section that is more popular atm). The prose was also uninteresting, so no plus points for that from me. I'm also disappointed that we put so much value and depth into the main villain Terran, explored his past, but very little of his present. We got so little of his dialogue directly from him and not told or read from somewhere and he didn't even get last words before he died. (Yes I want the cringe prolonged scene where someone is bleeding from the mouth in the arms of another and tells one last truth/secret XD) His death was too sudden, too quick. Also, the way the author dodged writing a long impactful poem she hyped up throughout the book is funny, but disappointing XD

I’m not okay right now. I cried so much for that little boy. For the brothers. I’m heartbroken. I wanted to hate him — but in the end all I could think about was the little boy no one protected, and that they took away from him the one person who tried. Of course, that doesn’t excuse the terrible things he did… but still. Wei is a great and strong character and will be a really great empress. I loved the writing, the magic system, the world, and the story very, very much. -> If I am a star, Maro wrote that night, then let me burn. Let me burn and burn until the whole empire is devoured, along with all its corruption, its villainy, its rot. Let me burn and burn until this night is not remembered, nor this year, nor this dynasty, until even history is buried in ash. And then maybe green things would grow again. -> If a gentle child could turn into a monster, I thought, then surely a monster could become gentle again. -> He wanted to become a tree. He wanted to be grass. He wanted to be the clouds and the daylight, that little ant crawling among the wet blossoms. He wanted, most of all, to become air. -> “They should have protected you.” “Don’t think I won’t do it.” “You deserve to be safe.” “Say one more word—” “You deserve to be safe.” -> “Swords do not know the concept of hate. A sharp enough edge does not fear being deceived, and a strong enough weapon does not need to think to win.”

Epische Fantasy, die mich ab dem ersten Satz fesseln konnte. Mit vielen unerwarteten Wendungen. Brutal und sehr Düster. Dieses Buch hat mich bereits mit dem ersten Satz in seinen Bann gezogen. Der Schreibstil ist so einnehmend und atmosphärisch, dass ich mich total in der Geschichte verlieren konnte. Man sollte sich allerdings bewusst machen, dass das Buch wirklich sehr Brutal ist und auch diesbezüglich explizite Gewaltszenen beschreibt. Es ist also nichts für schwache Nerven. Wei war eine äußerst interessante und kluge Protagonistin. Als Normalo nimmt sie am Auswahlverfahren der Konkubinen für den Prinzen Terren teil und schafft es tatsächlich Eindruck zu hinterlassen. Terren ist ein grausamer Prinz, welcher vor nichts zurückschreckt. Er ist nicht ohne Grund Träger der Dao-Siegels (Schwerter-Magie). Wei muss findet sich zwischen Intrigen, Mordanschlägen und vielen weiteren Grausamkeiten wider. Stets nach dem Motto "Vertraue niemanden". Auch wenn sie nicht die gleiche Bildung wie alle anderen genossen hat, geht sie sehr taktisch vor und lernt aus ihren Fehlern. Ich empfand es als äußerst angenehm, dass sie niemals den Kopf in den Sand gesteckt hat, sondern ihr Ziel niemals aus den Augen verloren hat. Der Schreibstil ist wie oben bereits erwähnt äußerst düster und bringt somit die gewollte Spannung und Atmosphäre perfekt rüber. Ich bekam regelrecht Gänsehaut und Herzrasen an manchen Stellen. Es ist für mich so undurchschaubar geschrieben, dass ich über 1-2 Wendungen sehr überrascht war. Zum Positiven. Allerdings lasse ich mich bei solchen Büchern immer gerne treiben und möchte nicht allzu viele Spekulationen nachgehen. Die Autorin bringt das alles super rüber. Für mich kam die Magie bzw. der Fantasyaspekt überhaupt nicht zu kurz, sondern wurde Perfekt in das kaiserliche Setting eingebunden. Es ist nicht die klassische Fantasy, sondern in solchen Büchern verwebt man die "Realität" ein klein wenig mit magischen Dingen wie zB die im Buch genannte Siegelkraft oder verwoben in Segen. Anders hätte es auch überhaupt nicht zum Setting gepasst. Fazit Ein wahnsinnig gut geschriebenes Buch, welches mich durch die vielen Wendungen und Intrigen total begeistern konnte. Man bekommt einen Einblick in die kaiserlichen Dynastien von China, die nicht immer rosig waren. Die meisten Grausamkeiten im Buch sind sicherlich nicht alle frei erfunden. ;) Die Intrigen und Geheimnisse innerhalb der Konkubinen etc. fand ich super spannend.
