It's where some of the most important literary friendships of the twentieth century are forged—none more so than the one between Irish writer James Joyce and Sylvia herself. When Joyce's controversial novel Ulysses is banned, Beach takes a massive risk and publishes it under the auspices of Shakespeare and Company. But the success and notoriety of publishing the most infamous and influential book of the century comes with steep costs. The future of her beloved store itself is threatened when Ulysses' success brings other publishers to woo Joyce away. Her most cherished relationships are put to the test as Paris is plunged deeper into the Depression and many expatriate friends return to America. As she faces painful personal and financial crises, Sylvia—a woman who has made it her mission to honor the life-changing impact of books—must decide what Shakespeare and Company truly means to her.

I sadly had an on-and-off relationship with this book because I was busy with exam season, but whenever I had the chance to dive into the Paris of the 20s that „The Paris Bookseller“ so lovingly described, I was happy! It felt like a warm hug from a fellow book-lover. The perfect read for summer with an Aperol Spritz or a cappuchino next to you (the latter first and after that the Spritz. I‘m in my Italian summer mode and I would not have it any different)! It was a fun historical book to read and the perfect timing since I plan a visit to Paris this summer and I will definetly stop by „Shakespeare and Company“ - even though it is not the original store of Sylvia Beach anymore. But I feel like it is still a symbol, an idea of a bigger plan that Sylvia started - and that never ended, not in the hearts of every writer and reader out there. She dreamed of a place where like-minded people who loved the arts could come together and create something together - and I feel like the book made me connect to every artist described in it in a way that the author probably intended. Fellow readers and writers, you are seen, important and represented by this book and I just loved it
