This is a must read! The story is soul shattering and joyful at the same time. Zusak describes the life of a young girl in Nazi Germany, managing to portray happiness and terror as co-existing elements. All the characters are beautifully drawn and really got to me. The narrator being death itself, talking directly to the reader, is absolutely brilliant, in my opinion. It seems fitting to me, but there's some foreshadowing on it's part, if that's not your thing. By no means is this novel an easy read. I cried, but I also laughed a lot and and will carry the book thief in my heart forever. absolutely recommend!
I cried. A lot.
Eine absolute Leseempfehlung!
I didn't know what to expect going into this one, but I dont think I expected to fall into it as deeply as I did. The narration was so unique, sprinkled in throughout the choppy stories of Liesel's life. I certainly was not expecting the ending and I certainly was feeling my emotions when it did. I have never read anything from the German perspective of WWII so I was very interested in that. At the same time, I am glad that it was a book full of good, kind German souls who I could follow. All in all, it was a very emotional and heavy book to read, especially now. But I am glad I read it and certainly would encourage others to do the same.
a masterpiece
