Jam and Redemption are my new favorite platonic power couple. I loved how they had each others backs all the time. I loved how awesome the librarian is. I loved how Emezi developed this extraordinary being called pet. I loved how casually the author installs queer personas. This is a peculiar and precious book, animated through it’s endearing characters. “It’s not helpful to push him right now. Pet growled in her head. Fine, it said, go and hold his hand, then. Whatever you humans do. It stalked away to the shelves. Jam went over to Redemption and sat on the floor next to the chair he was in. She didn’t say anything, not wanting to interrupt his silence. Instead, she climbed into the silence with him, staying there, feeling it’s soft curves.” “Jam swallowed hard. The comfort of its awkwardness was gone, and it seemed casually lethal now […].”
