Features: New hardcover jacket with special effects Four-color specially designed endpapers Specially designed foil stamped case Stenciled edges Ribbon bookmark History is seldom kind. In Min Jin Lee’s acclaimed and magisterial novel, four generations of a poor, proud immigrant family fight to control their destinies while exiled from their homeland. In the early 1900s, teenaged Sunja, the adored daughter of a fisherman, falls for a wealthy stranger at the seashore near her home in Korea. He promises her the world, but when she discovers she is pregnant—and that her lover is married—she refuses to bend to his will. Instead she accepts an offer of marriage from a gentle minister passing through on his way to Japan. But her decision to abandon her home and reject her son’s powerful father sets off a dramatic saga that will echo down through generations. Richly told and profoundly moving, Pachinko is a story of love, sacrifice, ambition, and loyalty. From bustling street markets to the halls of one of Japan’s finest universities to pachinko parlors and the criminal underworld, Lee’s complex and passionate characters—resilient, fierce women, devoted sisters, bright sons, fathers shaken by moral crises—survive and flourish against the indifferent arc of history.

This book will stay with me for a long time, maybe forever. And if not forever, I will be re-reading it. „She had not taught her children to hope, to believe in the perhaps-absurd possibility that they might win. Pachinko was a foolish game, but life was not.“

A special story which is incredibly well written. Following multiple generations of immigrants facing the same issues highlights how cruel effects racism has. I felt like it has a bit of a slow start, hence the 4 stars. Would definitely recommend though.

Rating: 3,5 ⭐ I'm surprised how invested I was into this family saga through 4 generations. Each page of this novel was interesting and at first I liked every character especially Sunja who is basically the catalyst of the whole family ordeal. But deeper into the story and the older Sunja became the less I could agree with her decisions. In my eye the main character became very stubborn and proud which in my opinion in time of hunger and war is very bad to have. Furthermore I didnt like how the author made huge time jumps almost each chapter varying from 1 ear to even 12 years! And this after a major reveal or a character death. Made me feel like the author didnt care for the characters like "shit happens, lets move on" I'm still mesmerized how the author was able to make every side character that is present only for a page or even a paragraph of the book feel very authentic and significant.
