A gorgeous clothbound edition of Woolf's fantastical and enchanting novel, designed by the acclaimed Coralie-Bickford Smith. Orlando has always been an outsider... His longing for passion, adventure and fulfilment takes him out of his own time. Chasing a dream through the centuries, he bounds from Elizabethan England and imperial Turkey to the modern world. Will he find happiness with the exotic Russian Princess Sasha? Or is the dashing explorer Shelmerdine the ideal man? And what form will Orlando take on the journey - a nobleman, traveller, writer? Man or... woman? A wry commentary on gender and history, Orlando is also, in Woolf's own words, a light-hearted 'writer's holiday' which delights in ambiguity and capriciousness. This clothbound Penguin edition is edited by Brenda Lyons with an introduction and notes by Sandra M. Gilbert. 'I read this book and believed it was a hallucinogenic, interactive biography of my own life and future' Tilda Swinton

Wouldn’t it have been a book club pick I think I wouldn’t have finished it. It took me a long time to get through and I didn’t enjoy my time. BUT I still think that the prose was beautiful if a bit complicated and maybe packed into sentences with too many semicolons. Sadly, rascism was apparent which dampend the very free spirited opinions and explorations of gender, sexism, sexuality and so on. The strongest element for me came after Orlando’s transition. There the role of the narrator became apparent to me. What I first saw as a weird stylistic choice I can to appreciate as it became clear that he doesn’t want to share the story anymore now that it is about a women. It not only gets harder to follow her because she publishes under a male name and her assets are now tied to a male cousin but he simply finds a story centering a women uninteresting. So the later chapters, for me, wer much enjoyable and explored more intresting topics on between the margins.
