Sal Paradise, a young innocent, joins his hero, the mystical traveller Dean Moriarty, on a breathless, exuberant ride back and forth across the United States. Their hedonistic search for release or fulfilment through drink, sex, drugs and jazz becomes an exploration of personal freedom, a test of the limits of the American dream. A brilliant blend of fiction and autobiography, Jack Kerouac's exhilarating novel swings to the rhythms of 1950s underground America, racing towards the sunset with unforgettable exuberance, poignancy and autobiographical passion. One of the most influential and important novels of the 20th century, this is the book that launched the Beat Generation and remains the bible of that literary movement.

Great book. I was travelling a lot at the time of reading it and moving places, so the fact that the main character does the same really resonated with me. Kerouac has a slow pacing, but the book is still captivating. He shows well the feeling of being lost and searching for your own path both literally and metaphorically

I get why this book might have been groundbreaking in the 50s but from todays perspective it’s so boring.I tried really hard to finish read it but I just couldn’t :(

Jules Rezension von Jules

first half inspiring to go out and 'live life', second half you realise, they are kinda idiots; Kerouac's spontaneous prose still very interesting to read

George Patrick HaneRezension von George Patrick Hane

gosh I didn‘t cared for this book at all - it was more interesting to watch the dust fall on my desk than to bother about what the protagonist is doing or thinking

Franziska GieseckeRezension von Franziska Giesecke

This damn thing took me two years! Overall it’s an ok read. It’s completely overrated though. As if we didn’t have enough insights from privileged, white, cis, male people. I can see how this is summarising the zeitgeist of the 50s for this particular group, which is a good thing…I guess
