I just finished Macbeth (again – yes, this was a reread because apparently I am obsessed with Shakespeare), and… yeah okay he got me again. This play? Pure chaos: Witches, murder, guilt, more murder, spiraling mental breakdowns. Like, imagine being told you’ll be king and instead of just chilling and waiting to see if it happens, you go full stabby-stabby on your guests?? Sir, please breathe. Also, Lady Macbeth?? ICON. Absolutely terrifying. Zero chill. Gaslight, gatekeep, murder queen. But let’s be honest: she carried that whole plan and then absolutely collapsed under the guilt. Relatable. We love a complex female villain who washes her hands for three acts straight. And Macbeth himself? A walking red flag with a sword. I mean… buddy. Maybe don’t listen to the three suspicious forest ladies telling you to murder your way to the crown?? Just a thought. But the descent into madness was chef’s kiss — like, I was horrified but also weirdly entertained the whole time. Shakespeare really said “mental health crisis but make it poetic.” So yeah, this isn’t my favorite Shakespeare play (cough Hamlet supremacy), BUT the vibes are immaculate. Dark, bloody, cursed energy. You know I love a tragedy where literally everyone dies and the moral is: “maybe don’t let ambition consume your soul lol.” 10/10 would read again while dramatically whispering “Out, damned spot!” at nothing. (And yes, I probably will reread it again. Eventually. Because I have a problem.)

⭐️4 Macbeth is, in my opinion, Shakespeare’s best work. His ability to create all of the characters and master their personalities is truly a feat. Lady Macbeth, the icon she is, is the catalyst for Macbeth’s downfall. Without her, Macbeth would still be the Thane of Cawdor. Lady macbeth defied the norms of the jacobean time period (“Unsex me here… take my milk for gall”) and was able to manipulate macbeth. Macbeth also defied the norms, being more feminine than most men would be in the 1600s (“Yet I do fear thy nature; it is too full o’ the milk of human kindness”) and also being so loyal to King duncan that he would trust him over his own wife (“my dearest partner of greatness”). In the end, he eventually gets manipulated and commits the worst sin of all - regicide. Again, this is one of Shakespeare’s best works and anyone who says any different is wrong.
