Jane Eyre (Penguin Clothbound Classics)
von Charlotte Bronte
Part of Penguin's beautiful hardback Clothbound Classics series, designed by the award-winning Coralie Bickford-Smith, these delectable and collectible editions are bound in high-quality colourful, tactile cloth with foil stamped into the design. Charlotte Brontë's first published novel, Jane Eyre was immediately recognised as a work of genius when it appeared in 1847. Orphaned into the household of her Aunt Reed at Gateshead, subject to the cruel regime at Lowood charity school, Jane Eyre nonetheless emerges unbroken in spirit and integrity. How she takes up the post of governess at Thornfield Hall, meets and loves Mr Rochester and discovers the impediment to their lawful marriage are elements in a story that transcends melodrama to portray a woman's passionate search for a wider and richer life than that traditionally accorded to her sex in Victorian society.

I really enjoyed reading Jane Eyre and was surprised by how strongly I connected with it. Jane felt like a real person to me rather than just a character, because her thoughts and emotions are described so honestly. Even when she is treated unfairly or feels completely alone, she refuses to lose her sense of self, which I found inspiring. What I liked most about the novel was Jane’s independence. She does not make decisions based on what would be easiest or most comfortable, but on what she believes is right. There were moments when I felt frustrated for her, especially when she had to suffer because of her principles, but that only made me respect her more. I also really enjoyed the relationship between Jane and Mr. Rochester. Their bond felt deep and meaningful because they challenge each other and speak honestly. The mystery of Thornfield Hall kept me interested, and the darker, gothic elements made the story more exciting without taking away from Jane’s personal journey. By the end of the novel, I felt that Jane had truly earned her happiness. Jane Eyre made me think about independence, self-respect, and the importance of staying true to yourself, even when it is difficult. It is a book I genuinely enjoyed and would recommend to others.
What a rollercoaster it was. I certainly didn't expect Jane's life to be as "adventerous" as it ulimately became. Sure there were many tedious sections and also very frustrating ones where I became disappointed with the heroine but one just can't dislike Jane. Whom I do dislike and never felt another way towards is St. John. Not only does his manner disgust me but also his overbearing faith wich he almost gaslighted Jane to follow. To not believe in her own way and follow her heart but adapt HIS believe and follow HIS commands. Ugh I'm getting mad remembering it. I must say eventhough I didn't approve of Mr. Rochester at first (I thought it wise for Jane to leave). I was imensly glad she came back to him (as the alternative would be hell). I then discovered that he can be selfless (he risked his life for others) and his heart was in the right place all along (in Jane's hands). At the end, even if it seems the two won't make a good match, they intellectually did, they made each other happy and fulfilled wich is all that is needed in a relationship. I'm also glad Jane found new family with her female cousins.
