You know those books where you just know before even starting that you’re going to love them? Yeah. This was one of those. And spoiler: I was NOT disappointed. Giovanni’s Room is such an important book. Like, it deserves every bit of hype and then some. Now, let’s talk characters. David? Yeah… he does some pretty shitty things. And yes, it made me want to throw him against a wall half the time. But at the same time, you get why he does it. Doesn’t make it less frustrating, but it makes sense. Giovanni though??? Baby. My heart. He deserved the world and instead he got… this mess. I just wanted to hug him and tell him it would be okay, even though I knew damn well it wouldn’t. The whole book was tragic, heartbreaking, and honestly had me sitting in silence afterwards. But it was also so, so good. Beautifully written, emotionally devastating, and absolutely unforgettable.

"[...] not many people have ever died of love. But multitudes have perished, and are perished every hour for the lack of it"

a story about self-denial, sexuality, and one’s place in the world, set in the 1950’s in Paris. James Baldwin’s characters seem drastically real and drew me into the story like scarcely a book has done before. „Giovannis Room“ was such a melancholic, intense, and raw portrait of love and queerness, which evoke the feeling that heartbreak is just around the corner. i absolutely adored this classic and won’t stop recommending it. honestly, there’s not much to say left, as i don’t think further explanations would do this masterpiece justice.
