Rezension von PeanutIn "If on a Winter's Night a Traveller" untersucht Calvino auf spielerische Weise, warum wir lesen. Es gibt eine Meta-Erzählung, in der man selbst die Hauptfigur und auf der Suche nach einem Roman ist. Auf dieser Reise findet man immer wieder neue Romananfänge, die aber nie zu Ende geführt werden. Er stellt also die Frage, ob es überhaupt wichtig ist, dass Geschichten fertig erzählt werden, oder ob die Eindrücke und die Vorstellung des Anfangs schon ausreichen. Im Laufe des Buches wird außerdem hinterfragt, welche Rolle der Autor spielt und ob er nicht austauschbar ist. Das Hauptthema bleibt aber der Grund fürs Lesen und die Art, wie wir lesen. Ein Buch zu lesen ist etwas Individuelles und seine wahre Bedeutung entfaltet sich erst im Kopf des Lesers. Es wirkt ein wenig so, als würde Calvino versuchen, seine Liebe zum Lesen auszudrücken. Neben der humorvollen Haupterzählung haben mich die Romanfragmente immer wieder aufs Neue gefesselt und begeistert. Das Buch wird nicht langweilig und bietet viele verschiedene Eindrücke und Emotionen.
