Heaven: A Novel

von Mieko Kawakami

Format:Hardcover

SHORTLISTED FOR THE 2022 INTERNATIONAL BOOKER PRIZEFrom the bestselling author of Breasts and Eggs and international literary sensation Mieko Kawakami, a sharp and illuminating novel about the impact of violence and the power of solidarity.A bold foray into new literary territory, Kawakami’s novel is told in the voice of a 14-year-old student subjected to relentless torment for having a lazy eye. Instead of resisting, the boy chooses to suffer in complete resignation. The only person who understands what he is going through is a female classmate who suffers similar treatment at the hands of her tormentors. These raw and realistic portrayals of bullying are counterbalanced by textured exposition of the philosophical and religious debates concerning violence to which the weak are subjected.Heaven stands as a dazzling testament to Kawakami’s literary talent. There can be little doubt that it has cemented her reputation as one of today’s most important young authors working to expand the boundaries of contemporary Japanese literature.A New York Times, Washington Post, TIME, Oprah Daily, CNN, Bustle, and Ms. Magazine most anticipated book of the year.A June 2021 Indie Next Pick

February 2023 This book is a literall 4,5/5 .The ending was so bitter-sweet. It's really devastating. They never got to see heaven. What happened to Kojima? All of this is really sad and heartbreaking. It's a really amazing book yet so sad and devastating. At the beginning I thought I wouldn't like it as much. Like the bullying scene were so unrealistic to me since I have never seen or experienced this rate of bullying. My mind can't grip the fact that people hurt other people this much. I'm devastated wow. It really hurts OUT ALL THE BOOKS I READ NOT ONE NOT ONE HAD MADE ME CRY THE I'M CURRENTLY CRYING December 2023 I have just re-read it again. I really like the book. By re-reading it I've come across things that I did not take to notice when I first read this. All this time Kojima was telling him that they're strong by being weak and that they should continue to accept the bullying and the slaps since trough that they're standing up against Ninomiya and co. She also thought that this he was his own eye and that was his sign. I disagreed with her because for her it's so easy to hold on to that sign since she's connected to and remembers the person who even brought up this sign for her. Her Dad. Our MC didn't have that or didn't know that he had that. His Mother who also had a lazy eye. In the book it isn't mentioned that he knew her. His step-mom also never brought it because she didn't want to go so deep into THE SIGN she thought he was keeping with her. Then we have Momose with his twisted thinking. Talking about how everything happens just like that and that they're not bullied because of a sign. They're bullied just because. * I hope that nobody thinks of like that. * Those two really contradict themselves. I really got mad at Momose while he was talking. He was right at some point especially with the Man-Daughter thing that he explained. His thinking is really sick and twisted but it also has some truth into it. I don't think that there was ever a painting called heaven. Heaven never existed. Heaven was just Kojimas hope. She wanted them to turn out like heaven. She wanted her and the MC to make heaven. But she couldn't get him to do that. This book is absolutely beautiful and heartbreaking. It will really lead you to think. I can only call it my favorite book!

4.25⭐️ "None of this happens for any reason, though. We can do those things, for no reason. We can. We do. And you can’t. There’s so reason for that, either. That’s how it is, at least for now. Six month from now, a year? Who knows? Who cares?" A novel about two middle schoolers being bullied by their classmates. Bonding over their shared misery, thinking the reason has to be their looked down upon quirks. Is this really the reason? And what if one gets rid of it? What else will hold their friendship together?

"Heaven" by Mieko Kawakami left me with mixed feelings. The novel revolves around two kids who are both victims of bullying, and it delves into the harsh realities of this issue. While the portrayal of the bullying and the bully's perspective felt brutally honest and realistic, I struggled to connect with or comprehend the main characters.Their emotions and actions felt somewhat distant and difficult to grasp, making it hard for me to fully invest in their journey. As a result, I felt disconnected from the heart of the story.
