My friends call me Matty.”So begins the riveting story of acclaimed actor Matthew Perry, taking us along on his journey from childhood ambition to fame to addiction and recovery in the aftermath of a life-threatening health scare. Before the frequent hospital visits and stints in rehab, there was five-year-old Matthew, who traveled from Montreal to Los Angeles, shuffling between his separated parents; fourteen-year-old Matthew, who was a nationally ranked tennis star in Canada; twenty-four-year-old Matthew, who nabbed a coveted role as a lead cast member on the talked-about pilot then called Friends Like Us. . . and so much more.In an extraordinary story that only he could tell―and in the heartfelt, hilarious, and warmly familiar way only he could tell it―Matthew Perry lays bare the fractured family that raised him (and also left him to his own devices), the desire for recognition that drove him to fame, and the void inside him that could not be filled even by his greatest dreams coming true. Touching story of living with addiction but was very repetitive by moments. But thank you for sharing your struggles
As someone who has always loved Matthew Perry, this book breaks my heart and makes me wonder what happened between the time he wrote this and the time he died. The book is great, it’s a good read about his life and his struggles and the things he has been through. Don’t get me wrong, it is tragic and sad, but good. Reading it now knowing he is gone makes it even more sad. I recommend this book to anyone who likes or loves Matthew Perry.
no words for this. it’s remarkable what matman was able to survive. i’m glad it came to a good end, i wish he had some more time in the end. rest in peace, matty! thanks for making me laugh (and cry reading your story) <3
Oh Matty, this one hurt. Matthew Perry was a brilliant actor, comedian and human. This book is honest and heartbreaking but also full of hope. I have to be honest; this book was sitting in my kindle for a year now. I wanted to read it, I truly did. But you know the thing with time - i didn’t pick it up. Now I did. Matthew Perry’s early death is devastating. A genius has gone too soon. His writing style is unique; you can compare the writing with old interviews and episodes of friends - he wrote exactly the way he spoke. It’s such an honest biography. He knew exactly when he messed up, when the disease decided for him and when he was at the point where he had to turn things around. His biggest success was Friends. We all know Chandler Bing. Matthew Perry was Chandler Bing. But he was also such a good soul who felt too much and wanted to help others so bad. He did a lot of work for other addicts. He tried to help people getting sober while he couldn’t. He tried to love but couldn’t love himself for decades. The whole world adored him while he didn’t recognise. The whole book was brutally honest. He didn’t try to paint a beautiful picture; he showed how a disease can destroy a whole life. In the end he was sober. In the end he had a lot planned. Sadly he didn’t have enough time. Thank you Matthew. For this book, for all the laughter you brought into our homes. If you’ve got the chance and the time, grab this book and read it. It’s really worth your while.
