It’s hard to say where I should start, because this book was so all-encompassing. In the end, I’d say it was really a four out of five stars. At the beginning, you get into the story relatively quickly, but then suddenly you’re kind of ripped out of it, and at first you don’t really understand much of what’s going on. You really have to read carefully and invest yourself in it. But once you’re fully immersed in the story, everything becomes very intense and very brutal. I’d also say it had a touch of the Powerless series—but only as inspiration. It’s not comparable to Powerless in any direct way. I just associated certain writing styles or experiences with it, but it’s definitely very much its own book. The characters themselves were very well written. At one point, I even developed a bit of hate for the FMC, but that quickly faded once I understood what she was trying to achieve. Overall, this is definitely a book you should read. I think it’s become one of my favorites, and now that I’ve found out there will be a trilogy, I’ll probably read the other books as well. Definitely read it—it’s worth it.
4,5* The pink cover is misleading what kind of story this is. I never would’ve expected the horror and cruelty this story entails. I love the magic system. I’m missing world building and character descriptions. I’m not really sure how e.g Erik the king looks like. The story itself is fast paced, building a lot of tension and suspense. Waiting with new revelations in each flip of the page. I’m excited to continue this story even though I closed the book shocked by the epilogue. You get glimpses of the cruelty of one specific character but the true horrors are revealed in that very last chapter. Left me speechless.
